BUNKER 66 “OUT OF THE BUNKER”. 2010 REINIG RECORDS.

BUNKER 66 “OUT OF THE BUNKER” EP. 2010 Reinig Records.

Review By: Mike Abominator

There are more and more bands popping up that play the black thrash, and also quite a few bands coming out that play the metal/punk style. Both “genres” or “styles” are fucking great to these ears. I have always been a sucker for a good skank beat ( or d-beat ). And the simple and straight to the point style has always appealed to me. These bands are usually influenced by metal like Hellhammer, old Sodom and old Destruction. Yet they also grab influence from punk like Discharge, Anti Cimex and Crucifix as well. And thrown in the black thrashing mayhem of old Bathory. BUT, it really all boils down to Motorhead and Venom in the end anyways. And in the end, it’s just good, kick ass metal! To make a long story short, these bands usually rule and get quite a bit of play with me!

Bunker 66 come from Italy and have come to kick your ass! Jojo of Reinig Records decided to start his metal empire with this recording. The cool thing about this release is that it was re-mastered on Analog Tape. To give it an even MORE old school sound. The skank beat madness of “Walpurgisnacht” starts off this fucker. Then the main riff kicks in and I’m reminded of old Slayer ( “Show No Mercy” era. )  So this means that it’s AMAZING! Damien Thorne has an evil attack with his voice. Mid range and raspy, it sounds like he drinks his Jack Daniels with razor blades. There is a killer mid paced break that gives way to the skank madness again with guitar solos raging from Bone Incinerator. Thorne also plays Bass, and the rhythm section he slays with Drummer Desekrator Of The Altar blazes like a fucking inferno. The killer “Blasphemous Ignorance” is next and also has a skank based attack that leads into the killer sing/shout along chorus. And then there is a mid paced one/two break that rules! The solo kicks in again with the skank main riff and the slaughter continues. These guys have killer riffs! There is some double bass and punches to end the song with a metal scream, which Thorne will do here and there! Like King Diamond on coke, doing a sing along with Tom Araya when he would do those high pitched screams. The mighty “Metal Redentor” is next and is my favorite on the EP! It starts fast as fuck banger with one of the best riffs on here. Then gets the skank party going again. More high pitched screams and pure crazy ass metal mayhem in this fucker of a song! It has a killer Mercyful Fate type break when the guitar solo kicks in and it slows down with Thorne raising the dead, before it fucking takes off again with the blasting madness and into the crazy ass skank beat again! ARGHHHHH!!!!!!! CLASSIC!

The “organic” production, due to that Analog re-master is killer. Everything really comes through and it sounds like a release from 1985. The metal punk Armageddon of “A Can Of Zyklon Please” starts the 2nd half of this monster. Fucking killer stuff that could fit on any English Dogs, Broken Bones or GBH record. Which also means it’s AMAZING! “Radioactive Bath” is up next with the similar vibe, yet also more of a Venom feel. It also has a killer slower banging part in the middle, that also has a double bass part that rips your skin to shreds as you bang your head. Then it takes off again with the skank insanity, along with the rest of the band chipping in with the shouts on the chorus. The evil dread of the riff in the last song “Lurking Demons ( Of War )” is also a highlight. And the chorus part with the double bass is also a fucking murderous riff. It is a slower banger for most of the song, and then the skank part comes in ala Hellhammer, complete with shouts, solos and a killer riff. This is a killer record that ends too soon!

Once again, here we have a band that is not trying to break new ground with anything. They are just playing true metal RIGHT! Yes, most of their songs are skank beat based, but they make it interesting with changes and different parts thrown into each song that sets them apart. Bunker 66 are a killer new edition to the rising list of bands that are doing things the right way. They play metal that is fun, yet aggressive. Ugly, yet beautiful to these ears. And TRUE to the legends that came before them. If you like the above mentioned bands, then you will like Bunker 66. It’s a great EP for Jojo to start Reinig Records out with. A total raw, underground metal classic!
