Devil Driver / Goatwhore / Suffocation / Thy Will Be Done – Show Review

“I COULD CARE LESS, I COULD CARE LESS, I COULD CARE LESS,” Oh if you didn’t hear this already …. “I COULD CARE LESS” was all the talk or vary much said when California veterans DevilDriver overpowered The Glass House in Pomona on January 7th 2009.

This was the first night of the North American January/February tour line-up consisting of Thy Will Be Done, Goatwhore, and Suffocation and of course DevilDriver. But this particular Thursday night didn’t quite fill up The Glass House as much as previous nights have done. Only a handful of metal heads flocked to the venue to venture a look as to who would bring down the house this time.

Opening up the night was Rhode Island metallers Thy Will Be Done giving it all they possibly could after being held up in Missouri for 60+ hours. Vocalist J Costa saying “Don’t ever go to Missouri” during the band’s brief intermission as the audience laughed with agreement. Thy Will Be Done’s set up was the energy downer that kept the audience at bay for the most part, some metal heads interacting with the guitarists as they walked up and down the stage, ranging out to shake hands briefly before fiddling their fingers brutality against their guitar strings.

After Thy Will Be Done’s set-up, Goatwhore the most intense death metal act within the metal scene broke out the energy force field within seconds after their introduction song had departed. Having audience goers being tossed and pushed from all sides and angles if not standing in place banging their heads to the beat of the music. Their front man Ben did the most interaction of all, pumping his fist in the air on/off if not leaning over the stage as the alignment of people standing along the rail shouted with utter excitement.

Now Goatwhore isn’t the only death metal act that can send the energy flying each and every way possible. Suffocation on the other hand can indeed bring it on even ten times better if not more, one being that this act has been around for quite some time already, so being in the eyes of a legend is an overwhelming presents. Suffocation’s set was plain and simple heavy, heavy, and more heavy. That’s all that was heard was the rattling heaviness of the bass guitar and drums if not the guitarists breaking out the solo riffs every few seconds.

But that’s not where the energy quite ended. No sir DevilDriver were the headliners this night and they were not going to go out of style. DevilDriver clearly encouraged each and every person alive to give it all they got to get themselves from the floor to the stage. This being an easy task as several people got thrown up into the air and crowd surfed their way towards the stage if not being tossed around like a raggedy Anne doll in the mosh pit parade unveiling itself in the center.
Overall this death defying night was unlike any other given night expect ten times the brutality.
