SKINLAB has been known to have “the stinky dreads.”

By: Natalie Perez

The Bay Area bruisers known as Skinlab have returned after a 3 year hiatus but this time they’re “IN FOR THE KILL” according to frontman Steev Esquivel. He discusses the band’s current status, latest release, and upcoming plans for the 2010 year.

1. Tell me about the three year hiatus you guys had gone through. What happened to let this occur what do you hope to accomplish as of right here and right now?

Steev: During that time, we were still a band – but went off to explore different styles musically and jam with other people. We always knew Skinlab would get back together – we just needed to take some time off to focus on life a bit. We always knew we could write more records and would as soon as the right deals came around. We’re excited about the new album and glad that people are starting to go out and get it. It’s been a long road but we are still a solid band and have plenty of life left to do so more damage.

2. How about your label mates Flatline, you guys have done a handful of shows, are they good friends of yours what can be said about their relationship and your record label relationship.

Steev: We’ve met them before and yeah. They are all solid dudes. Hope they bounce back from their band members leaving.

3. Most of the band members have dreadlock hair style that a new trend you guys want to promote or just your own style.

Steev: It’s not a trend it’s our hair haha…….I mean yeah it’s something that Skinlab has been known to have “the stinky dreads.”

4. What can be said about the music video for “In for the Kill” what was the concept behind it, is there another single/video in the works?

Steev: We have plans for a second video, but we are still trying to ride this one as much as possible. We are shooting to have a new video done to release along with our next tour planned for March /April 2010.

5. What about your latest LP ‘The Scars Between Us” what was the lyrical concept and the theme behind this LP, what was the writing/lyrical process when creating it and bringing it to the table.

Steev: The basic concept of the album is life and its struggles that were all feeling right now. There’s a lot of chaos in the world right now, it’s not easy to survive under such pressures that we’ve never felt before. It’s definitely an album that a lot people can relate to. This is why we didn’t include lyrics with the album. Everything is laid out there are no hidden meaning like previous albums. It’s all laid out you just have to listen it for yourself.

6. Out of all the social networking sites, (MySpace, Facebook, Twitter) which of these do you focus on the most and does each individual member have their own personal accounts, or does each take turns checking up on the band’s profile when it comes to these types of sites.

Steev: We are fortunate enough to have our label help us with the Myspace page and Twitter. We have our own Facebooks which we do run and have a great relationship with the fans that want to reach out.

7. Your MySpace says ‘The Bay Area bruisers Skinlab are back after a 3 year hiatus and this time they’re “IN FOR THE KILL” – is this your guy’s slogan?

Steev: Not much of a slogan……..but it works. It’s defiantly what we’ve set out to do, it’s a crazy industry right now…. kinda dog eat dog. So yeah we have to set out to get things with a bit more aggression which is where “In for the Kill” came from.

8. Do you have any personal favorites off ‘The Scars Between Us” if so which ones and why?

Steev: My favorite track is Papertrails, for the dark dirtiness of it. Also for the fact I like to hear my son Eli at the end of the track….pretty spooky. In For The Kill is also one of my favorites. I really like the whole album, I feel it’s one of our best yet, definitely represents us in 2009!

9. Where do you see Skinlab in five years?

Steev: Well by then we hope to have regained our momentum .We’ve all agreed Skinlab will eventually become somewhat of a Neurosis…..we’ll never break up, well keep playing and touring as long as the fans want us. The whole touring nonstop is something we’re NOT looking to do, well tour at our own pace when we feel it makes sense.

10. What does the upcoming 2010 term hold for you guys?

Steev: We are setting a tour up for March /April throughout the states. And hopefully some European shows this summer and maybe a stop in Australia. We’ve also managed to reschedule our South American tour to June also ….so we definitely have some stuff to look forward to.

11. What can be said that hasn’t been said about ‘The Scars Between Us”?

Steev: Haha um let’s see. That’s it’s not a FUCKIN nu metal album!!

12. Any last words?

Steev: Wed just like to thank all the fans, friends and family who have supported us through the years. Hope to see ya’ll on tour in 2010! Don’t forget to check out our new merchandise at Districtline.com/Skinlab
