Tim Call can be considered the fucking mayor of Portland, Oregon. At least in the underground metal community he can be! He has been in countless bands up there that have destroyed the PDX and left it in ruins. From the crushing doom of Aldebaran, to the grinding horror death of Splatterhouse, to the 15 other bands that he has been a part of, Timmy brings the terror of some killer metal. Weregoat is NO different. This might be his best project yet. This is some harsh, brutal and horrifying shit here. And I mean HORRIFYING. This will give the weak NIGHTMARES! Fucking absolutely CRUSHING death metal/black death in the Blasphemy and Beherit tradition, that is raw and insane metal of death noise that will erase your body and soul from the earth (and wherever the fuck the rest of you planned on going to.) This style of “bestial black death” has become almost trendy in a sense with bands playing at blazing speeds and busting out the cross bullet belts, chains, eye black and gas masks like it is 1990 all over again in the Ross Bay Cemetery. Some of these bands are killer, some, well, not so much. The difference here is the riffs. OHHHHH THE FUCKING RIFFS! You can fucking understand what is going on here and it not some big jumbled mess of reverb and feedback like some bands have failed at with this style. Timmy and the boys here have fucking NAILED it. And IT is fucking amazing!
The thing is here, that with the blazing speeds at times with what is going on, Weregoat can slow it down and slowly kill you, like with the song that opens up side 2 “Invoking the Black Oblivion”. Every song has a classic part to it that just rules. And it all runs together like one big long nightmare. And this nightmare only ends when the needle rises up and the record stops spinning. Take the album opener “Nuclear Cunt” for instance. After a creepy as fuck intro of some sort of 1920s funeral music, some bellowing low fidelity burps of a bass line, and some screeching feedback, the riffs of the song come to strangle the life out of you. It is so simple and straight forward, yet done so well and with such hate and anger, you will sit there and shake your head in the darkness, then start banging your head with the death noise. You will find yourself transplanted to that Ross Bay Cemetery, or even that crypt “Down There” in Rovaniemi, Finland back in the day. Songs like the awesome 2nd track “The Hideous Stench of Occult Slaughter” follow that same template that those gods did, but it also bashes you in the head with a different twist on the metal of death. There is a short blast of madness called “By the Light of the Moon” that runs 3rd on this fucker that has the same great fast banging going on, then it’s all over before you know it. Until the crushing slow riffs of “Abysmal Whore” come to annihilate. It is slow and prodding until the speed comes back with a vengeance.
The other songs that round out side 2 are “Blackwinged Abominator” with the evil gallop that brings the dread, and the back to back massive brutalizers “Antichrist Command” and “Nocturnal Hunt” (if the intro riff doesn’t stick in your head, you deserve to die!) Both of these songs rip your face off like a rusty old chainsaw that gets going, and then gets caught up in some bone and stops working. You have to kick the face off of it and start the slicing over again! The sound is dark and evil, yet fat and “wall of noise” at times, with total fucking chaos going on. But it is also clear as to what is going on. The riffs are fucking fantastic. The vocals are all from the pits of hell. The demons rule here! And the production is perfect for these set of songs and is heavy as fuck, yet is “clean” enough to hear what the fuck is going on. This is ESSENTIAL and one of my top albums of the year! GO FUCKIG GET THIS NOW! Timmy really couldn’t care less either way, like me, he will tell you to fuck right off. But go get it anyways; you will thank me for it! Or as the great David Horn would say: “SIX HUNDRED AND SIXTY SIX FUCKING SKULLS!!!!!!!!!!!!”
